Many homeowners and farm owners are fond of using well water because they don’t have to worry about recurring water bills. Additionally, the water supply when using a well is much cleaner than regulated city water. To keep their water running smoothly, they rely on a well pump — of which there are four common types: centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps, turbine pumps, and solar pumps. Here’s what you need to know about these different types of well pumps and the benefits offered by each.
Centrifugal Pumps
Centrifugal pumps convert rotational kinetic energy into hydrodynamic energy to transport fluid and allow water to flow from a low level — such as a water well — up to a high level. The supplied rotational energy is typically generated by an electric motor which spins internal impellers, or rotors, that cast out the flowing water through centrifugal force. The example of turbomachinery is one of the simplest and most efficient methods for pumping ground water to the surface.
Submersible Pumps
Submersible water pumps are devices that operate underwater and are located below your ground well. These highly efficient pumps are one the most popular types of pumps on the market for pushing water to the surface. They can be stored as little as 90 feet or as far as 300 feet below ground. If you don’t want to hassle with a lot of maintenance, a three-wire model well pump is ideal for your situation. However, if you don’t mind performing regular maintenance on your well pump but want a simple installation process, then a two-wire submersible pump is the best option.
Vertical Turbine Pumps
Similar to centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps move water up from an underground well or reservoir. However, instead of centrifugal force, turbine pumps are powered by an electric motor that increases the water’s velocity as it enters the pumps rotating impellers. Such high velocity creates pressure that propels the water skyward. Vertical turbine pumps are used in spaces where a submersible pump cannot fit.
Solar Well Pumps
Solar well pumps are ideal for a variety of reasons, especially if you live or conduct business in a remote area. Since solar well pumps use the sun to generate their power, they are reliable and have low operating costs. Transporting and relocating these pumps is easy, and they require little to no upkeep.
