National Farm Safety and Health Week, which takes place on the third week of every September, is meant to bring awareness to the importance of keeping agriculture’s most precious resource safe – its hardworking men and women.
According to the National Safety Council, Farming ranks as the number one most dangerous industry in the US, with 20.4 work-related fatalities for every 100,000 workers, which is six-times higher than the combined average for all US workers.
The CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that around 100 agricultural workers per day experience an injury that causes them to lose time at work. A survey of 4,000 households in the Midwest US found that an injury occurs on nearly one in five farms each year, 80% of which require some sort of medical care.
Although it remains the most dangerous industry to work in, agriculture has been made much safer in recent decades thanks to efforts by those in the industry, media, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies. Thanks to their efforts, the fatality rate went from 53 per 100,000 in 1987 to the 20.4 that it is today.
National Farm Safety and Health Week is the perfect opportunity to take steps toward a safer working environment by carefully approaching field adjustments or repairs, taking precautions against slips and falls, and retrofitting tractors with rollover structures like roll bars or roll cages.
