How a Softener Works

One of the most common misconceptions people have about water softeners is that it is the salt inside the tank that softens the water. In reality, there is a bed of tiny resin beads that filter out hard water chemicals. The salt is used to clean the resin during a cycle called regeneration, so they can continue to function properly.

First, hard water enters your home via a main water supply and enters the water softener. From there, the resin bed removes the minerals and contaminants that make the water hard and sends the softened water into the plumbing throughout your home.

Regeneration

As you use water, the resin beads in your softener become saturated with the minerals they remove. Eventually the beads need to be cleaned so they can continue to function – this is where regeneration comes in.

Water softeners use a strong saltwater solution called a brine for regeneration. That brine periodically flushes through the resin bed, removing hard water minerals and leaving fresh sodium in their place. Those minerals are then flushed out of the system via a drain, and the softener is ready to use again.

Maintenance

Water softeners require some periodic maintenance to continue operating effectively. The salt level in the softener’s brine tank needs to be checked every 4-6 weeks depending on how hard your water is and how much water you use. It is also important to have your equipment inspected a few times each year. Excess salt buildup can prevent the salt from making contact with the water, and in turn, not being able to remove the minerals.
