How a Plasma Cutter Works

plasma cutter

One of the most useful tools in a metalworker or fabricator’s arsenal, a plasma cutter works by sending an electric arc through a gas being sent through a constricted opening. The gas can be air, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, or others. This process heats the gas to the point of entering the 4th state of matter – plasma. The metal being cut is part of the circuit, and the electrical conductivity of the plasma allows the arc produced by the plasma cutter’s electrode to transfer to the work surface.

The Science Behind the Cutting

The nozzle’s constricted opening causes the gas to pass through at a high speed, cutting through the molten metal created by the plasma stream. Gas is also directed around the perimeter of the cutting area to shield the cut from outside contamination.

Many of the modern plasma cutters today utilize a pilot arc between the cutter’s electrode and nozzle, and is used to ionize the gas into plasma before the arc transfer to the working surface.

An Invaluable Tool

Today, handheld plasma cutting systems are a critical part of fabrication, repair, and design processes. Their precision and versatility allow for efficient, accurate, and high-quality work that reduces turnaround time and keeps machinery up and running at full capacity.

When your repair or fabrication calls for the use of a plasma cutter, look no further than Domer’s. Our machine shop is equipped with modern plasma cutting technology that allows them to quickly complete work while maintaining top quality, minimizing your downtime.

Equipment failures happen, and we always work to get you back up and running as efficiently as possible.
