MIG and TIG welding are the two most common techniques used by professional welders due to their ease and reliability. While both techniques share several similarities such as the ability to be used in a variety of situations to ensure a clean bond between two metal objects using an electric arc, there are some significant differences between the two.
Here are some of the main differences that separate the MIG and TIG methods of welding.
MIG Welding
Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding primarily uses a metal wire that is fed into the area between two other metals that are being heated to very high temperatures. The wire acts a binder that helps join the molten metals.
This type of welding is relatively inexpensive, not too time consuming, and works well for a larger welding job.
However, it also is not the strongest type of weld and can also be more dangerous to you and hazardous for the environment. Even with some concerns, MIG welding is a great technique for many projects.
TIG Welding
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a more complicated technique than MIG welding. TIG requires the welder to manually insert the filler metal with one hand while the other hand operates the welding torch, requiring a certain level of expertise.
With this extra difficulty comes a more refined weld that is super clean and precise. It is also safer for the operator and healthier for the environment. It is also much more difficult to do, more expensive, and more time consuming.
Best Uses of Each
Both of these techniques are helpful for different projects. MIG welding is well suited for projects involving thick metals and large quantities, as it is faster and hotter than TIG welding. Products that are not as focused on aesthetics are also better suited for MIG welds.
Meanwhile, TIG welding is a more appealing option for smaller tasks where a refined weld will look very clean and pretty. It is also helpful for thinner metals that might be damaged by the MIG technique.
