Protecting Hydraulic Hoses from Abrasion

Hydraulic hoses often operate in extreme conditions, and up to 70% of hose failures are a result of abrasion and external damage, much of which can be prevented. Hydraulic hoses that are subjected to friction or impact regularly need to be monitored closely to catch any damage early before equipment failure puts worker safety in jeopardy.

Many hydraulic hose applications like forklifts, scissor lifts, and agricultural equipment can benefit from specialized sleeved and shields to protect against abrasion.

Abrasion Sleeves

Perfect for protecting the entire length of a hose or bundle of hoses, abrasion sleeves are designed using coated nylon to provide both exceptional abrasion resistance on the outside and a smooth inside to prevent internal damage. Abrasion sleeves are rated for tens of thousands of abrasion cycles without failure, and many can be installed post-assembly, allowing you to assess your abrasion-resistance needs first.

Hose Shields

For hoses that are being abraded consistently in one area, hose shields are a great, low-cost solution. Made from plastic, hose shields attach to small sections of hose via cable ties for simple assembly that does not require you to disconnect the hose prior to installation.

Hose shields are available in 4-8 inch lengths for hoses with inside diameters of ¼ to 2 inches. Hose shields are not recommended for areas that see heavy abrasion, or for hoses that have more than a small segment being exposed to friction.

Spring Guards

For hoses that are subjected to abrasion and other abusive conditions, spring guards can help prolong their lives. Spring guards spiral around the hose and are available in vinyl and steel. In addition to their anti-abrasion properties, spring guards prevent hose kinks and provide anti-crush or pinch protection as well.

No two hydraulic hose implementations are the same, and choosing the right way to protect your hoses from abrasion can be a daunting task.
